About Leslie Vaughn
President and founder, EMS Billing Services Inc.
Leslie Vaughn, president and founder of EMS Billing Services Inc., in Omaha, Neb., is one of the region’s leading experts in billing and collections for ambulance transport sand fire services. With more than 20 years of experience in billing, collections, coding and physician practice management, Vaughn brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the field.
Before founding EMS Billing Services Inc. in 1995, Vaughn served as a practice management assistant coordinator for Alegent Health System in Omaha where she was responsible for developing and implementing efficient processes and practices for more than a dozen physician specialty offices. Vaughn’s duties included overseeing office operations that included everything from staffing, coordination of insurance contracts and liability coverage to billing, collections, coding and ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
Vaughn’s experience also includes serving as a consultant to Ehrling Bergquist Hospital, a U.S. Air Force base hospital in Bellevue, Neb., where she was challenged to develop an efficient billing and collections process. Within a year, Vaughn created a billing process that significantly increased revenues for the hospital and was later adopted as a model for air force base hospitals across the country. She later honed her skills as a coding specialist for a community hospital in Blair, Neb., where she provided coding and billing services for physicians and ambulance services.
While working in Blair, Vaughn developed a deep appreciation for the dedication, commitment and hard work shown by small communities to keep their emergency ambulance and fire services running. She also realized that many EMS and fire services volunteers lacked the billing and coding know-how to bring in the revenue needed to keep their service viable. Through this experience she developed a desire and passion to help small town EMS sand fire services survive by sharing her billing and coding expertise. Vaughn combined her business savvy with her vast knowledge and understanding of Medicare rules and regulations and the unique guidelines surrounding ambulance billing and collections to form EMS Billing Services Inc. Today, EMS Billing Services Inc. serves several hundred volunteer and municipal ambulance and fire services in the Midwest. Through Vaughn’s leadership, the company has seen an average annual growth of 20 percent since opening its doors and is now the largest and most respected ambulance billing service in the Midwest.
Vaughn has personally recruited an experienced staff, each with their unique area of knowledge and billing expertise. Over the past 15+ years, Vaughn has developed a respected presence in the EMS industry. She has been a relentless advocate for rural emergency medical services in the Midwest and has worked with legislators to educate them about the issues volunteer EMS services face to financially survive. She has shared her knowledge of EMS billing, reimbursement and collections at regional EMS conferences. Vaughn also has developed important relationships with CMS representatives on both a regional and national level and represents Nebraska on the Wisconsin Physician Services Provider Education and Training Advisory (WPS PET) board.
